Paul overturned the accusation that he was fickle, fleshly and unconcerned about the Corinthians with a theological argument. Paul's calling as an apostle meant that what he said about his travel plans were as inspired as his preaching about God's plan of redemption. Moreover, his position and office had been clearly demonstrated by his ministry amongst the Corinthians. Paul argued that the Corinthians couldn't pick and choose what they wanted to believe with respect to God's apostle--his words stood or fell together. Thus, if they undermined his office by pointing to his unfulfilled travel plans, they at the same time undermined the foundation upon which they were standing, namely, redemption through the Christ that Paul preached.
