Who was the first guy to fall asleep in church? Well, it was communion Sunday, and the room was packed. The apostle Paul was preaching. Paul "prolonged his speech until midnight." It was stuffy in the third-story chamber. A young man named Eutychus, sitting on the windowsill, nodded off and fell out the window. The congregation was horrified and poured down the outside stairs to the broken man. Eutychus was quite dead, but not for long! Dr. Luke tells us, "Paul went down, threw himself on the young man and put his arms around him. 'Don't be alarmed,' he said. 'He's alive!'" (Acts 20:10). You have to feel sorry for Eutychus. He fell asleep on the Apostle Paul. He fell out of a third-story window! And Luke was there, making the first record of someone falling asleep in church. There have been millions since! Some have trouble staying awake in church due to exhaustion or medication. Yet, God's people need to have hearts that are receptive to the Word and a posture of soul which inclines them to hear the Word and profit from it. Eutychus fell asleep in church, but what about us? Are we asleep in the light? We can now listen to, love and obey God, and we can now listen to and love on another. To listen to one another is a great gift of God. It encourages the heart. It shows that others are important, valued and loved. When we listen, we reflect the One who always listens to us!
