Last week Paul’s argument culminated with his exclamation that Christ had become a curse for us! It was in Christ’s death on the cross that we have forgiveness of sin. It was in His death that we have received the promise of the Holy Spirit through faith.
As we now look into verses 15-18, it’s as if Paul anticipates yet another legalistic objection. “Paul, we understand that Abraham was saved by faith, but when God gave Moses the Law, that all changed. God gave Abraham His covenant, but that covenant was incomplete. God gave Moses a more complete covenant. So, we have to follow it now.”
I can almost see Paul sit back for a moment, take a deep breath, smile, and then he charges full into this objection. The objection that was raised by these legalists showed their deep misunderstanding of God and His covenants. God’s covenant to Moses was conditional upon man’s faithfulness to obedience, but His covenant to Abraham was an unconditional promise of grace.
