In Chapter 3, Paul has been answering objections to his teaching that salvation comes by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. In the preceding verses we saw how God’s covenant to Moses (the Law) was conditional upon man’s faithfulness to obedience, but His covenant to Abraham was an unconditional promise of grace.
So, the question that arises then is, “What about the Law? If salvation came by God’s promise to Abraham, then why did He give the Law?” The Law has a very important purpose: it's to drive us to Jesus Christ.
