Fear is something we all feel and experience in life. It can be on a spectrum from mild discomfort to paralyzing fear! What we fear controls us. So, who or what do you fear? Many Christians fear other men! They are afraid of what others might say or do, and because of that fear they hide their faith rather than stand for Christ. Peter advises us to conduct ourselves in our time of stay here in fear. Fear of what or who? Fear of God! The fear of the Lord is the most foundational of all spiritual virtues. It is the grounds for our obedience, for life itself. Most theologians define the fear of the Lord as reverential trust. They infer that believers in Christ have nothing to fear about God in the sense of dread since their salvation is safe and nothing can separate us from God's love. But have we taken the fear out of fear? The writer to the Hebrews says we should be a little bit afraid of God. And Peter gives us three reasons why. First because our heavenly Father will discipline us in this life. We should fear His discipline. Secondly, because God judges impartially, and one day we will be held accountable before God for what we've said or done. The prospect of standing before Him one day and give an account should send shivers up our spines. The third reason is because of the great things God has done for us-- namely our redemption! He has bought us with the blood of His Son, and has set us free. We are not our own, but have been bought with a price-- and therefore we should live in the fear of God.
