One of the ways in which many Christians cope with the pressures they feel from society surrounding them is to hide their Christian faith. They become 'chameleon' Christians. When with the world, they look, act, talk like the world, but when with believers on Sunday, they look, act, and talk like Christians. But as believers in Jesus Christ, we've been called to holiness! We've been called to be God's holy people in this world, to be distinct, different from the world surrounding us. But we've not only been called to be God's holy people, we've been called to live as God's special people. This means that we are not to compromise our faith by conforming to our former lifestyle in order to fit in with the world. In Christ we've become new creations. We are thus to reflect God's holiness in every aspect of life. We are to 'become' holy; that is, it is a PROCESS that takes time and daily obedience to the commands of the Lord. We need to guard ourselves against developing outward religiosity without inward heart change. This leads to hypocrisy. The reason that it is a life-long process is because of the pattern: We are to be holy as God is holy. In our pursuit of holiness, we need to beware of developing a 'holier-than-thou' attitude. With God as our pattern and standard by which we judge ourselves, it should not lead to haughtiness of spirit but rather to humbleness of heart as we realize just how far short we fall and how much we need God's grace and forgiveness each day of our lives.
