My grandfather was one of the kindest, gentlest, compassionate men that I've ever known. And yet I feared him, not because I feared his disciplinary hand, but because of his great love for me. I never wanted to do anything that would cause him pain or lower his view of me. Peter tells a group of first century believers living in a non Christian world that they were to 'conduct themselves throughout the time of their stay here in fear', that is, in fear of God. Fearful because of God's disciplinary hand in this life and the judgement to follow. But fearful also because of the great things God has done for us, the greatest of which is our redemption. You and I who were in bondage to sin, to lust, to spiritual ignorance, to a futile, aimless lifestyle, and to binding traditions have been redeemed, that is, set free by the payment of a price. The payment for our sins was the death of our Savior, the Lord Jesus. He indeed is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of us all. He died in our place to provide for us eternal redemption. He frees us from our sin, not so that we can live for ourselves but so that we can now live for His glory and praise.
