Walking with Peter

As a background to our study of the first letter of Peter, it will be beneficial to follow his story through scripture. Consider it his credentials. As readers of his letter, it is important for us to know who he is and what he has experienced. What we'll find is that he is a man that can relate to our weaknesses as well as our common Lord. As an eyewitness to the glorious minsitry and resurrection of Jesus, and filled by the Holy Spirit of God, he is an excellent guide and an authoritative leader of God's people. Read his story as preparation for what God will teach us through his letter. Here is a mostly chronological list of key scriptures in which he is mentioned:

John 1:40-42, found by Andrew his brother and brought to Jesus. Renamed Cephas/Peter.

Luke 5:1-11, The miraculous catch and "depart from me" saying. "From now on you will be catching men."

Matthew 4:18-20, Mark 1:16-18, While fishing, Jesus calls him and Andrew, They leave their nets and follow.

Mark 3:16, Matthew 10:2, Luke 6:14, Acts 1:13, listed among the 12.

Matthew 8:14-17, Mark 1:29-30, Luke 4:38, Jesus healed his mother-in-law and ministered at his house.

Luke 8:51, Mark 5:37, One of three at the healing of Jairus' daughter.

Matthew 14:28-33, walks on water on the Sea of Galilee.

Matthew 16:16-23, Mark 8:27-33, Luke 9:18-20, John 6:68-69, He confesses Jesus as the Christ, then rebukes Jesus for speaking of His coming death.

Matthew 17:1-4, Mark 9:2-6, Luke 9:28-33, 2 Peter 1:16-18, one of three at the transfiguration.

John 13:6-11, Refuses to let Jesus wash his feet, and then is convinced.

Matthew 26:33-35, Mark 14:29-31, Luke 22:31-34, John 13:36-38, his denial is foretold, but he promises loyalty.

Matthew 26:36-46, Mark 14:33-42, Luke 22:40-46,

Matthew 26:51, Mark 14:47, Luke 22:50, cuts off the ear of Malchus.

Matthew 26:69-75, Mark 14:66-72, Luke 22:55-62, John 18:17-18, John 18:25-27, followed Jesus with John to the trials, then denies Jesus.

Luke 24:12, John 20:2-6, saw the empty tomb.

John 21:1-23, Peter and the others at the Sea of Galilee after the resurrection. Jesus appears, give miraculous catch, Peter swims ashore, eats with Jesus. Jesus restores Peter and instructs him to 'feed my lambs,' 'tend my sheep,' 'feed my sheep.'

Acts 1:13, abiding in Jerusalem with others waiting for the day of Pentecost.

Acts 1:15-26, Peter recommends they replace Judas, and lays down standards for the replacement.

Acts 2:14-41, Peter's sermon on the Day of Pentecost.

Acts 3:1-26, he heals a crippled man and preaches again.

Acts 4:1-23, arrested with John and taken before the council, then let go.

Acts 5:1-11, resides over the death of Ananias and Sapphira.

Acts 5:17-42, imprisoned, scourged, then gives a defense before the council.

Acts 8:14, goes to Samaria.

Acts 8:15-25, prays for the baptism of the Spirit in Samaria, rebukes Simon the Sorcerer, then returns to Jerusalem.

Galatians 1:18; 2:9, received Paul.

Acts 9:32-34, Visits Lydda, heals Aeneas.

Acts 9:36-43, in Joppa, with Simon the tanner, raises Dorcas.

Acts 10, receives Vision of the sheet, preaches to a centurion and his household.

Acts 11:1-18; 15:7-11, advocates the preaching of the gospel to the gentiles.

Acts 12:3-19, imprisoned and freed by an angel.

Galatians 2:11-14, publicly opposed by Paul for hypocrisy.

Acts 15:6-11, speaks up for the ministry of the Spirit among the Gentiles.

Miscellaneous:

Mark 1:36-37, Peter and the others go looking for Jesus. Luke 8:45, Peter mentions the crowds pressing in on Jesus when the woman touches him for healing. Luke 12:41, Matthew 18:21, Matthew 15:15, Mark 13:3-4, seeks clarity on teachings. Luke 22:8, prepared Passover. Mark 11:21, notices withered fig tree. Matthew 26:58, Mark 14:54, Luke 22:54, John 18:15, follows Jesus to the High Priest's palace. Mark 16:7, Jesus sends a message to Peter and the others. Luke 24:34, 1 Corinthians 15:4-5, mention that Jesus appeared to Peter.
