Zechariah 3:1-5 gives us a beautiful picture of the beautiful doctrine of justification by faith alone. Joshua is the high priest, but he is filthy in his own works and righteousness. He is unfit for heaven and Satan stands ready to accuse him. But the Lord intervenes, rebuking Satan and reminding the devil that God has chosen Joshua and plucked him as a brand from the fire. Then God deals with Joshua's filthy garments. He takes them away and gives him bright, clean and glorious festal robes. This is justification dramatized. Joshua has no righteousness of his own. He is filthy. But his sins are taken away and put on Christ, who suffers the punishment for them. Christ then gives Joshua the perfect robe of His own righteousness and obedience, and instantly Joshua is justified before God. This scene represents what happens with all of us who truly believe.
