The story of Mephibosheth's welcome by David to the king's table might not seem like a fitting passage to prepare for the Lord's Supper, but it has many parallels to the gospel. Mephibosheth was lame. In his own words, he was a "dead dog." He is a "useless eater" who can't contribute anything to David. But David didn't bring him to his dining hall because he thought Mephibosheth had something to offer. He did it because he wanted to show kindness to the household of Jonathan, his dear friend with whom he had made a covenant of peace. So, David invited him to his own banquet table, and treated him like his own son. We are like Mephibosheth. We are lame, useless eaters. We can't give God anything but sin and disability. But God adopts us as His own children, and sets us down at His table for one reason -- to show His kindness and grace to us. And He does it for the sake of Christ. The Lord's Supper is the table we sit at to dine with the King.
