Today I will continue our sermon series which is an expository study through the book of Ecclesiastes. We find ourselves in the second section of the book, which is where Solomon seeks to prove the assertion he made in the first section. We have been considering the various ways in which Solomon had explored life “under the sun” in his attempt to find meaning to his existence, and a sense of lasting satisfaction in his soul. But he always came up short, and he always found himself empty and frustrated. At some point later in his life he reflected on his pleasures and his possessions, and this fascinating book is the record of what he discovered. In the text before us we will look at another aspect of life that really perplexed Solomon. But we should not fault him, for it seems to be quite perplexing to most people. I am referring to divine providence in all of the affairs of our lives. God is always at work and we are quite constricted, so cannot discern His ways. This too was quite vexing and grievous to Solomon. Once again it is my prayer is that the Lord will be pleased to bless the preaching of His word as we continue this important study.
