Today I will continue our sermon series which is an expository study through the book of Ecclesiastes. We find ourselves in the second section of the book, which is where Solomon seeks to prove the assertion he made in the first section. Having explored the meaning of life “under the sun” through the lenses of wisdom and pleasure, he now analyzes his life's labor. Like many men before and after him, Solomon sought to find a sense of significance and meaning to life by what he did. In fact, many men find their essential identity, not in what they are, but rather in what they do. So Solomon reflects on his toil and labors and then makes personal comments on what he discovered. And, like everything else he has explored, in this too he comes up empty. But for the first time he brings God into the picture in his closing remarks and that is truly a refreshing change. As I have been doing, following the exposition I will make some detailed application. Once again it is my prayer is that the Lord will be pleased to bless the preaching of His word as we continue this important study.
