Today I will continue our sermon series which is an expository study through the book of Ecclesiastes. We find ourselves in the second section of the book, which is where Solomon seeks to prove the assertion he made in the first section. In the sermon last time we looked at another aspect of life that really perplexed Solomon, just as it perplexes most people. I am referring to divine providence in all of the affairs of our lives. I mentioned that it is imperative that we understand the “times” that Solomon referred to are not merely events that occur in our lives, although it is true that they do. But the point of Solomon is that there is an “appointed time” for each of these events. That is to say, they come into our lives when they do because God has ordained them; God has appointed them; God brings them to pass. So God is always at work, but here is where we get perplexed – we are quite constricted, so we cannot discern His ways. This too was quite vexing and grievous to Solomon, but we can learn valuable lessons from him. Again it is my prayer is that the Lord will be pleased to bless the His word preached as we continue our study.
