Is there ever a time to refuse the poor? According to this passage, in one sense, there is. This passage teaches church policy, and it instructs us to refuse to put younger widows on the list of church support. This doesn't mean a church can't give one-time or occasional financial gifts to such women, but it does mean that they shouldn't be put on a regular support. That should be saved for "true widows," those identified in the text and spoken of in last week's sermon. Younger widows are encouraged to remarry. They will be supported by means of a new husband. So, what this does is gives the church a blueprint and a way to think through the various giving dilemmas she will often face. There is a basis for turning someone away and directing them to another means of support, so that the church will not be burdened.
