Paul says that true widows should be honored in the church by being financially and materially supported by the church. He distinguishes between widows and "widows indeed." He defines what it meant by "widows indeed" and then gives a substantial list of qualifications that must be met to satisfy the definition. These are the widows who are to be honored by being put on the financial support list. Families are to be the first line of support for widows -- first children, then grandchildren. But if a widow is truly alone, and she has only been married once and she is age 60 or above and she has demonstrated a godly character, then she is to be supported. As our social programs collapse and go bankrupt in this country, the church needs to be prepared to support widows. The time for preparation and action is now.
