Because God declares that the Messiah is Jesus, we must believe! That He is the paschal Lamb. (31-33) He died on the Day of Passover (30-31a) His bones were not broken (31b-33) That He is the pierced King. (34) A soldier pierced His side (34a) Blood and water came out (34b) Primary meaning: Jesus' humanity—a real death! Possible symbolism: both eternal life and cleansing Blood (Jn 6:35; 1 Jn 1:7) Water (Jn 4:14; Jn 3:5; Ezek 36:25) That He is attested by reliable witnesses (33-37) By John (35) By Scripture (36-37) Not one of His bones will be broken (36) Preservation: Psalm 34:20 Passover: Exodus 12:46/Numbers 9:12 He will be pierced (37) Zech 12:10 Rev 1:7 Purpose AND result: that you all also may believe! (35b) Applications Unbelievers: Believe that Jesus is your Passover Lamb…that He died for you! (Ro 5:8) Believers: Believe that Jesus is your Passover Lamb…that He died for you! (1Pe 2:24) All: We will all face the Pierced One—whether in joy or mourning...let's be ready!
