Today I will continue our sermon series which is an expository study through the book of Ecclesiastes. We find ourselves in the second section of the book, which is where Solomon seeks to prove the assertion he made in the first section. Having explored the meaning of life “under the sun” through the lenses of wisdom and pleasure, he now pauses for a moment of sober reflection. And once again he reveals that he came up absolutely empty! But in this case it was for a different reason. Formerly he came to realize that none of his pursuits brought him any ultimate sense of satisfaction. But now he comes to realize that, regardless of how much he might have achieved (even if it produced momentary satisfaction) – nothing he had ever done and none of his possessions would be ultimately meaningful because his life would end in his death. This may not be significant when we are young, but it becomes much more so when we advance in years. Following the exposition I will make some detailed application. Once again it is my prayer is that the Lord will be pleased to bless the preaching of His word as we continue this important study.
