"The point in these verses is that obedience to Christ is inseparable from love for Christ, and love for Christ is inseparable from faith in Christ. So then John it sums up in verse 6, 'whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.' 'Walk' in the New Testament is a metaphor for one's way of life, so friends are you walking the way Jesus walked? Is that the normal reflex of your heart? To consider Christ's will and example in all your choices? None of us can live perfectly the way He lived. That's not the point. Jesus lived for us so that by faith His merit could be ours–that's the gospel–but to say that we know Jesus is to follow after Him, and the gospel gives us the power to live our lives the way He taught us to live."
