Dearly beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, our text this morning brings before us the two paths. These two paths are a common theme throughout the Bible. Beginning in Genesis 6, where the LORD sees that all flesh has corrupted His way on the earth, and continuing through Psalm 1, the classical statement of the two paths, and on to the presentation of the two ways in Proverbs, Hosea, and then to the statement of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount about the two roads, this theme looms large in Scripture. Brothers and sisters, to walk in God’s ways is the path of life. That is the straight and narrow way that Jesus talked about. It is the way of obedience and trust. But Scripture brings to our consideration another path: The path of the wicked, the broad road to destruction, the way of sinners. Brothers and sisters, in every choice, in every action and thought, these two paths branch out before our feet. They are not theoretical constructs; they are practical realities that meet us at every turn of our walk through life. The text before us presents one basic message: Flee the wrong path and go down the right path. The path of evil trips you up, but the path of righteousness leads directly on to life.
