Dearly beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, we have here, uniquely in extant wisdom literature, an exhortation in which the father quotes his father. We get a brief vignette of the speaker’s childhood, and the time when he learned wisdom from his father and mother. Why does the text zoom out like this to show the generational continuity? Not simply nostalgia, nor simply attachment to tradition for its own sake. The reason the text quotes from the previous generation is that the people who love you are the people who want you to embrace wisdom. That is the message of the text before us this morning. It’s not just your parents; it’s your grandparents too! The more someone cares about you, the more he wants you to be wise. Brothers and sisters, embrace wisdom, for those who love you most commend her most.
