Jesus tells a story about a man who persistently knocks at midnight at the door of his friend's house in order to get bread for another friend. The man will not help him because of friendship, Jesus says, but because of persistence. Jesus follows this parable up with an exhortation to ask, seek and knock. He attaches an unshakable promise. If you ask, you will receive. If you seek, you will find. If you knock, the door will be opened to you. He then adds further motivation by demonstrating that even evil fathers like us will give what is good to our children. And then he finishes the passage with the grand climax. The Father will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him. Do we beleive this? Do we believe that we can ask for the Holy Spirit for greater sanctification for ourselves and our churches? Do we believe that if we prayed persistently, in faith, for an outpouring of the Spirit, that we would receive it? Do we believe that if we went to God on behalf of a friend and knocked and knocked and knocked in order to get bread (the Holy Spirit) for our friend, that we would get an answer?
