The prophet Zephaniah appears upon the stage of Israel's history at a time of great crisis. The northern kingdom had already been dispersed by the Assyrians, and for almost sixty years the southern kingdom of Judah had embarked upon and become entrenched in religious apostasy. God sent His servant Zephaniah with a threefold message:
1: The prediction of ruin 2: The preservation of a remnant 3: The promise of restoration.
Zephaniah's ministry and message was one of the contributing factors which led to the reformation during the reign of Josiah. King Josiah did not adopt the attitude and approach of fatalism. He did not say, "Whatever will be will be and therefore there's nothing I can do". He did not use prophecy as an excuse for inaction and disobedience. Josiah's response to the Word of God is a good example of how we should use and not abuse the prophetical portions of scripture.
