The prophecy of Nahum concentrates upon the overthrow of the Assyrian empire and the destruction of its power base in the city of Nineveh. God gave Nahum specific detail as to the driving back of the invading forces during the reign of King Hezekiah, the death of the Assyrian King, and the preservation of the remnant of Judah. The men of the Assyrian army who were destroyed by the angel of the Lord were descendants of those who had been converted to the Lord in Nineveh during the ministry of the prophet Jonah. It may well have been the case that these men when they were growing up as children may have sat upon their grandparents laps and heard them recount the remarkable scenes in the days of Jonah. Yet only three generations later and God is pronouncing his woe upon the once favoured city. It is a sad and sobering reminder that grace does not flow in the veins.
