There are weaker brothers and there are stronger brothers in the faith. Those who are weak are those who are uncertain and doubtful about the permissibility of a certain action which is in fact permissible. Because they lack knowledge, they lack faith. In the early church, idolatry was everywhere and new Christians were saved out of it. They did not want to have anything to do with idolatry anymore. They knew that when they purchased meat in the marketplace, there was a strong chance that the meat had come from an animal that had been sacrificed to idols. Weaker Christians thought the safest course was to avoid meat altogether. They drew the circle wider than necessary and thought that God would be displeased with them if they even unknowingly partook of meat that had been sacrificed to idols. The truth was that the meat remained meat. There was no necessity to abstain from meat in order to avoid contamination. Those who were strong in the faith knew this. What they needed to do was to be patient and accepting of their weaker brothers, not be arrogant and contemptuous toward them. We need to practice the same patience and humility today.
