Today we begin a short series on the subject of Christian liberty and unity. We have a hard time getting along with other Christians who have different convictions than we do. We seem to think we need to have complete uniformity with one another before we can have warm fellowship together. We don't seem to know how to cope with the fact that other Christians apply certain biblical principles differently than we do. The principles are inflexible and incontrovertible. The differences come in the application. So, for example, Christian modesty. One woman believes that in order to be modest she should only wear long skirts or dresses, but certainly not pants. Another Christian woman believes that she also must be modest, but thinks that pants are OK, so long as they are not tight-fitting. Shall these two women be at war with one another? They share the same desire to be modest and please the Lord, but they apply the principle differently. Romans 14 to the rescue. We need this chapter. We need it badly in our day. The rewards of embracing it are tremendous and the consequences of ignoring it are devastating.
