INTRO: We have now covered the first unit of Paul's letter to the Ephesians in the practical section, which begins in chapter 4. There are three doctrinal chapters and three practical. I titled 4:1-6, the call to unity; and 4:7-16, the provision for unity.
We come now then to the second part of the practical section. It starts in verse 17 and goes through verse 32. I have outlined these sections around the commands Paul gives on the walk of the Christian, that is, how the Christian lives. Note the first one in 4:1:
1 I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,
Then in verse 3 he tells us what that is. It is, "endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." Now in 4:17 he says:
17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
So as I outline this, in 4:17-24 we have a description of their conversion. In chapter 2 Paul said that they all once conducted themselves in the lusts of the flesh, fulfilling the desires of the mind, and were by nature the children of wrath. Look at what he says in 4:17-19:
