This passage touches on current issues but is often misunderstood as is marriage itself. People have false assumptions about both and we must to deal with them for the sake of clarity. Many people assume marriage is an arrangement of convenience, an agreement involving two parties who are free to separate again, a mere social arrangement that is not necessary. Those assumptions ignore the idea that marriage forms a new unit in which the individuals are no longer free to act on their own; and the very nature of life that results from creation. Many people assume the Bible teaches the general subordination of women, that marriage is a power relationship and something that is culturally formed. In fact, our text says nothing about general gender relationships (it refers exclusively to marriage); it condemns authoritarianism; and in practice it liberated women in the early centuries AD. The Bible brings certain principles to bear on the subject of marriage. First, it is to be 'in the fear of God', where both parties bow to Christ and his Word. Secondly, the Bible must settle disputes. Thirdly, marriage forms a new unit where those who unite are 'no longer two'; therefore both must act in the interests of the other for the other is part of oneself ('no one hated his own flesh'). Fourthly, there is a principle of 'headship' that is also found in Christ's relationship to the Father and arises from the complementarity formed at creation. The fifth principle is that 'love builds up'. something that reflects the nature of God, is the responsibility of the 'head', and reflects unity. All symbolised in creation - equal, identical, reuniting. It reflects Christ's love for his church
