The Bible calls believers to do what is right not only because it is right but because of what God has done for them. 'Put off the old; put on the new' refers to our spirit as well as our conduct. We must put away bitterness, which looks for evil and seeks to harm - the opposite of love that 'thinks no evil and keeps no record of wrongs'. It results in outbursts of wrath or a settled hostility to others. Worse than that is malice, that actively pursues harm when opportunity allows. These must be put away along with verbally attacking others. In place of such a spirit we should be proactive and responsive, even when we have been wronged. 'Become kind' involves taking the initiative, as God did with us. 'Tender-hearted' means feeling others' pain and responding, just as Jesus was 'moved with compassion'. And that spirit must be exercised towards those who have wronged us - 'forgiving one another'. The writer gives three reasons for making such a change. God has forgiven you in Christ, even when you were repugnant and hostile towards him. God treats you as 'dear children' with the sense of care and belonging that implies - so must we treat fellow believers - 'imitate God'. And Christ's love is so great he offered himself for us. What he gave was not less than himself. It was a religious act - an offering to make a sacrifice that would atone for our sin. Since Christ died in love so that we would be cleansed we ought to co-operate. Since the Spirit performs that work of sanctification in us we must not grieve him by indulging the spirit of the 'old man'. We have a choice between scorning the work of Father, Son and Holy Spirit or obeying this text.
