The believer's response to God's grace should be seen in every area of life, including relationships in the home. Just as the husband and wife relationship reflects that between Christ and his church, so the parent and child relationship reflects that between God and Christ, and between God and his people. The instruction to children ('filed with the Spirit') is to obey both their parents. Three reasons are give: it is part of nature; it is God's Law, and God emphasises it by a promise. There should be a deep awareness of the contrast between the church and the world, for this command is 'in the Lord'. Lawlessness is Satan's character replicated in humanity, whereas loving obedience is the character of Christ replicated in the believer. Jesus example is to be taken up with his Father's interests while being subject to his mother and Joseph (Luke 2). So Christian children should subject themselves to imperfect parents. But this is beautifully balanced by the instruction given to fathers - 'do not provoke your children to wrath'. That calls us to examine both our acts of discipline and our way of life. We antagonise and discourage them when our discipline is inconsistent, disproportionate, harsh, or when we do not listen to why they act as they do.Our general approach is also important - do we lead them to independence or are we domineering? do we nurture them or refuse to engage with them? are we insensitive or do we try to understand them? The parent's (especially the father's) approach should reflect the fatherhood of God, who loved his Son giving him glory and a people. It should also be 'filled with the Spirit', for then we will show the Spirit's fruit and reflect God.
