Our text tells how to look for wisdom, and it concludes by telling us what happens when we find it. Once we have undergone the arduous search for true wisdom, what will we understand? What is the end of wisdom? The end of wisdom is the fear of the LORD. So says v. 5 of Proverbs 2. When you have finished seeking Wisdom, you will understand the fear of Yahweh and find the knowledge of God. With all due respect to Chesterton, the fear of the LORD with which wisdom begins is never and can never be something which the true Christian outgrows. No, indeed. The end of wisdom is to fear God, and to know Him. We’ll look at the teaching of this text under three headings this morning: The source of wisdom, the search for wisdom, and the nature of wisdom. What I hope to show you is that wisdom comes from the Father, that it must be earnestly sought, and that it consists of fearing God and knowing Him.
