Dearly beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, we come this morning to the first speech of personified Wisdom. This Wisdom is a type of the Lord Jesus Christ. She is like Him in many respects, and indeed, He Himself is the true Wisdom of God, the fulfillment of all that Solomon put down in Her speeches. Wisdom is not Herself Christ, any more than King David was himself Christ or the Temple was Christ. But like David, like the Temple, Wisdom is a type of the one to come, and as we get to know Her, we will come to know Christ the wisdom of God better and better. Indeed, Wisdom is so very much like Christ that if you want, you can take the outline on the back of your bulletin and pencil in “Christ’s place,” “Christ’s message,” and so on all down the four points of this morning’s sermon. If you know where Lady Wisdom dwells, what Her message is, how She threatens fools, and what She promises to those who listen to Her, then you know some very significant things about Christ the antitype. Listen to Lady Wisdom, because to know Her is to know Him. Indeed, if you are wise, you will fear Lady Wisdom’s wrath and embrace Her promises.
