"Everything in moderation," goes the old line. Don't binge and don't abstain, but do take it easy on the bad stuff. Moderation walks the line between asceticism and indulgence. It's a reasonable approach: take the temperate middle road to health. "Everything in moderation, including moderation. Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess," observed Oscar Wilde. Wilde was onto something. Moderation has a proper context. Moderation in faith and commitment to Jesus Christ is fatal. Balance is another word for lukewarmness. "And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: 'The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation. I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. " (Revelation 3:14-16) Hot coffee and hot tea is good. Poor some cold water in and its gross, like eating New England fried clams that have gone cold. I urge you not to become a fossilized relic of the past, but to return to your first love Jesus Christ. Don't be just an impression of something that once was – be a vibrant, living legacy of the gospel's truth. We live in a place where living stones are so few. We so desperately need revival. We so desperately need to examine ourselves in light of God's standard.
