A few years ago, several of us went on a tour of some historic Protestant New England sites. We visited old graves, old rocks, old houses, and churches that are only recognizable as such now by their architecture. These are monuments to the past. To revivals that are now long gone. From new births to mausoleums, to a New England that is largely dead and hard as a rock. A fossil. A place where living stones are so few. We so desperately need revival. Why? First, we need revival because God's presence is neither sought nor even considered by His own people. The Holy Spirit has been grieved so much we are in danger of losing our lampstand. The worst enemy the church faces today is the rut of the routine. That is perfectly normal for a cemetery, but God's people are supposed to grow. Living things grow. Self-righteousness is terrible among God's people. If we feel that we are what we ought to be, then we will remain what we are. Second, we need revival because sinfulness increasingly overtakes us through the proliferation of bad habits. Today millions of so-called Christians are two timing God. Third, we need revival because prayerlessness sets in like a cancer. Beloved, keep on asking, keep on seeking, keep on knocking. Revive us O Lord!
