The Lord when He comes bringing salvation, He comes in a very personal way, and He deals with people according to His own purpose, but this text of Scripture shows us also, that He deals with them and saves them in accordance with His own perfect vision of who they are, and what they have lived for before they were converted. It is only God who can open a person’s eyes to the greatness of the glory of Christ His Son, and His Son’s perfect work, so that they will believe and be saved. This is what makes the conversion of any person to Christ, so very wonderful. It brings glory to God that they come to Christ for salvation; He who is the only Savior of sinners. If they are a moral person, the most moral person who has ever lived, still they must come to Christ in order to be saved. So, having said this to you, let us now proceed to examine the conversion of Cornelius to Christ. I want to set before you, four things that a person may be, or do, or experience, and yet not know Christ yet. 1st of all – A person may be extremely devout and even fear God and yet not know Christ yet. 2nd – A person may be spoken to by an angel of God and yet not know Christ yet. 3rd – A person may give alms generously and pray to God always and not know Christ yet. And 4th – A person may have many friends around them who are moral as they are, and yet still not know Christ yet. I will explain these things to you in terms of what common grace is in relation to saving grace, and what a morally good person is to do if they would find Christ and be saved.
