How should followers of Jesus Christ regard the material world and earthly possessions? Jesus taught that we are to use, enjoy, and appreciate them - but not become attached to them. Our time, possessions, and riches are the Lord's provision for sustenance and use in service to Him. Thinking and planning by the child of God must always be contingent upon His will.
In this section, Jesus gave three reasons not to worry or be anxious. The first being that God makes adequate provision for us. He takes care of providing our basic necessities and has every detail of our lives and circumstances under His control. Secondly, God knows what we need and what is best for us. The final reason He gave is that each day has its own trials to give our attention to. Concerns for tomorrow must be prayerfully cast before the Lord.
A life free of worry and anxiety doesn't mean a life free of trials and trouble for God's children. Under His control, they are all a part of His plans for our lives and accomplish His good purposes.
Neither worry nor careless indifference is the appropriate attitude for the believer as daily responsibilities are carried out.
After giving the commands not to worry and the reasons why Jesus pointed His followers to the root problem of worry. It is living by only a “little faith” when our call is to trust the Lord fully. Worry reveals an unwillingness to do that.
Trusting the Lord completely today is the only real preparation we can make for tomorrow!
