Following His pattern of teaching, Jesus states the principle and then elaborates on it. In addressing the issue of judging, He states as principle that judging must not be hypocritical. He gave two cautionary instructions as concerns judging others: 1. You will be judged by the same standard that you judge others. 2. Before judging another you need to get things right in your own life.
Having a judgmental attitude and hypocritical spirit is a symptom of being self-righteous, religious, and unsaved. This strong and serious warning must be heeded by all who believe they have been declared righteous before God. This attitude and spirit is an evidence of external righteousness and a void of the internal cleansing and imputed righteousness that comes by genuine faith.
Also discussed in this message is the proper sense of judgment believers are responsible for. This judgment will never include motives as a basis. It is God alone who will rightly judge both what each person does and why. Biblical judging must be practiced when believers are in obvious sin that must be confronted.
Jesus also instructed His followers not to continue to give His word out to those who reject it with disdain and disrespect. Attempting to enforce conformity to religious practices without a change of heart only results in hypocrisy and a greater hostility toward God.
