Paul's ministry was specifically focused on taking the message of the Gospel to new areas where it had not been heard. It was his practice for having the necessary support for this ministry to either pick up some work in the area to support himself or to take support offered by already established churches in other areas. He wanted to make sure there was no confusion - his ministry was not motivated by a desire for financial gain.
This issue comes up because Paul was going to Jerusalem with a contribution from some Gentile churches in Greece to give support to Jewish believers who were struggling to have their material needs met. At that time living in Jerusalem became very difficult for Jews who became believers. This contribution Paul was carrying was from Gentiles for Jews was an acknowledgement of their fellowship. Their support demonstrated their recognition of the common faith they shared in Jesus Christ. The Jews had already shared with the Gentiles spiritually through the salvation blessings resulting from the Abrahamic Covenant and the Jewish Messiah.
