David, who was a type of Christ, experienced great victories over his enemies. The Philistines knew what it was to suffer defeat in battle against Israel's greatest king. And yet, they would come back again, to press once more upon the kingdom, ruled by the one God had chosen
We can learn lessons from these examples. Rejoice and be thankful when God gives us victories, in our battles against sin and the Devil. But we know this, our old enemy will return. There will be further battles to fight. Don't be tempted to relax; to let down your guard. Be watchful, realising that one victory is not necessarily total victory. The Devil does not sleep; he knows how to get his own servants to attack God's people, the church.
Does the situation get easier as we get older? many would say no - indeed temptations, doubts, trials and difficulties continue to attack us. Therefore be battle ready! Pray, enquire of God, and seek to live according to God's Word.
Finally, be encouraged! Christ will have victories; notable triumphs. Although His enemies (and therefore our enemies) will come back, He will, indeed He has already won the victory. He is the victor! He will have a people He has saved from the Devil's power. Stay the course, fight the fight, run the race - Christ's notable victories include us - sinners, saved by grace!
