These Hebrews had been humiliated in certain ways. They lost their personal property and their personal dignity for the sake of the Lord Jesus Christ. They visited their brethren in prison and became sharers in their sufferings. And yet they were content in their sufferings. How could they do this? They were looking for a City whose Builder and Maker was God. Their joy and their hope was in Christ. But now they had become weary and were giving up because Christ had not returned.
Paul told them that they needed to have endurance. He tells them that if they do endure that they will know the reality of Christ's Coming. His Promise is not an empty one, but a certain one. They needed to remind themselves to live by faith. Even in times of persecution.
