The Gospel is the Good News that, in Jesus Christ, God has taken the punishment of our sins upon Himself in order to set us free from sin's punishment and from the bondage of trying to overcome its punishment through our own useless labors. God has atoned for our sins. There is no atonement left for us to make. We are free in Him.
We may preach about moral duties and tell various Bible stories with appropriate applications and lessons about courage and faith and loyalty and service etc. We may describe in detail the virtues of a godly life. We may expound upon the attributes of God Himself. We may teach about hell and sing about heaven. But none of this alone is the gospel. If our messages are not full of the complete and satisfying work of Jesus Christ dying for our sins and rising again to be our eternal life… if our messages are not warmed through and through with the theme that Christ has fought the battle for me and you and won it all in our place… atoned for all our sins… granted to us all His righteousness… If this gospel is not permeating our messages than all of our messages are bones without blood… they are skeletons without flesh… It is a body without a heart.
And there are some pathetic ones who are compelled to preach this gospel!
