One of the primary functions of most religions is to be the common bond for the society. These religions do not serve to free a man from men but to bind that man to men. The Christian religion is different. It doesn't seek to draw under it some vast cultural and political society. Christ comes calling, not to groups of people, but he comes seeking the lost individual. He stands at each individual heart and knocks and says, “Whosoever hears my voice and opens the door I will come into him.” It is a singularly personal thing, this salvation that Christ brings to us. In fact, when the gospel of Jesus Christ is embraced by an individual it sets him shockingly free from the society of men. This isn't easy. There is a pain in that separation and yet in the midst of that reality comes a sense of great inner conviction and even pride. "I am free… I am free from others… from all others." That is the state of every Christian. And Paul has a word for that Christian in 1 Corinthians 7:23 “Be not the slaves of men.” Or in other words, “Don't let any person make you their slave…their servant.”
Now here is the amazing thing. From this high point of complete freedom from people and their expectations and demands… and with an intent that no one would make Paul, again, their slave, Paul says, "I now make myself a slave to all people. I am free from them entirely and I won't let them enslave me. But I will enslave myself to them."
