Being "citizens" implies being part of a nation, not solitary. Citizens must unite to serve their country. A country without unity will break apart from civil unrest, strikes, and mutiny. Likewise, disunity in the church is toxic and dangerous. Sadly, churches throughout history have been plagued with disunity. Churches at Rome, Corinth, and Philippi suffer from disunity. Modern churches also witness disunity, resulting in quarrels, antipathy, and love growing cold. In this passage today, we learn from Paul that only by the benefits of Christ can we attain unity through Christlike humility.
