Though this passage is addressed in particular to wives, this passage is given for the blessing and benefit of the entire church so that we will be encouraged to know and support and seek that which is truly beautiful. In this passage women, especially, are called to seek after eternal and true beauty. There is a beauty in submission, which flows out of creation. There is also a beauty in submission which flows out of redemption, because sometimes submission involves suffering for sake of the gospel. This beauty is that which is eternal and is superior to the self-centered attempts at beauty. Seek the beauty of a meek and quiet spirit. From verses 1-6, we note first from verses 1-2, the duty and beauty of proper submission, second from verses 3-4, the beauty of a meek and quiet spirit, and third, from verses 5-6, the example of past saints.
