Justification can sound like an off-putting word which belongs in the world of words and their meanings. Understanding it properly however unlocks great joy and blessing to the believer. In fact it is a doctrine that logically leads to us feeling great joy. Justification is to do with the legal declaration that the person is no longer guilty for their offences. Those who possess that declaration are those who can be called justified. What that declaration gives to the person is righteousness. They are not only acquitted but are now positively viewed as holy and upright. These are the benefits of Christ's life and death. His sacrifice and blood take away the guilt of our sin. The reward of His holy life and heaven's verdict of Him being righteous is also imputed to the sinner who believes. The verdict of God is final and unchangeable. The law of Moses, whether the moral, civic or ceremonial aspects, could not bring such joy because the sinner could never live perfectly according to them. Other efforts to arrive at justification fail and it is only through faith in Christ that we can possess these benefits. We must never allow the thought that we are such failed people to rob us of the joy of knowing we are declared righteous by a holy God.
