The strong Jewish element in the church at Rome that Paul was writing to had many convictions and previous religious practices that were potentially divisive. Under Jesus Christ, the Lord of the church, individuals have freedom concerning various issues that had previously been mandated under the Mosaic Law. Liberty is the freedom to do in some situations and not to do in others.
The application of these liberties can become a cause for divisiveness because of differing levels of maturity. Instead of judging one another, the biblical exhortation is to judge ourselves so as to do nothing to hinder the growth and walk of other believers.
Believers are reminded not to impose their personal preferences or conviction on others. Love is to be the motive for being sensitive to the convictions of others and the sacrifice it may call for as adjustments are made.
The goal is for personal behavior to edify others, not to undermine or tear down their godly character.
