Theme: God is a great rewarder of those who depend not on their righteousness but on God's! In vv. 18-23, we read of the exchange between Jesus and the Rich Ruler. He asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus confronts him on his use of the word "good," and then tells him the law. The man gives a delusional response that he has kept it all from his youth. Jesus explains he still lacks the kingdom and shows him that he lacks total dependence on Christ. In v. 23, the ruler rejects Jesus. We see in application, the importance of recognizing the need for alien righteousness. We also learn to beware of the pull of materialism. In vv. 26-27, we see the disciples' disheartened reply and Jesus' hope-filled answer. This shows us we need to recognize that the whole of salvation is of God, and that following Christ is worth it all!
