How does one pursue wisdom? Solomon, the king of Israel, now writes of a personal pursuit toward the prize of wisdom, understanding, discernment. In these first four verses, Solomon writes of HOW one may pursue, run after, seek out, this valuable pearl; this gemstone, this golden vessel called wisdom. Solomon’s description of pursing wisdom, understanding, and discernment is full orbed. It is emphatic. He speaks of an energetic, a vigorous, a robust and spirited, a diligent, pursuit of wisdom, of understanding, of truth. There is a great “wooing” here. As Solomon writes to his “son” . . . as a wise, a mature, a tender loving father figure, he is urging, encouraging, he is spurring on, he is appealing to this one. And he is hopeful, that this one son . . . indeed, that ALL, who read these words would be moved to diligently pursue wisdom. Here in these first five verses of Proverbs 2, we will see that the pursuit of wisdom ends in with the discernment of the fear of the LORD and the knowledge of God. |
