During the time of Christ's first coming there was a visible manifestation of intense demonic activity. Scripture seems to indicate that there will be a return of this during the Tribulation.
The fifth trumpet judgment continues the parallels with the plagues on Egypt with the release of demons from the abyss. Now being confined in the bottomless pit, they will be released to inflict great suffering on the earth, while yet under God's restraint. These demons are described as locusts with power like scorpions. There will be no relief from the pain and suffering they inflict. People will long to die as an escape and yet they will not be able to separate themselves from the torment of this judgment.
A frightening description is given of each of these creatures revealing them to have animal and human characteristics. Even in their demonic ranks there is order as they inflict their torment under their king. According to God's ultimate plan they are allowed a five month period of time to inflict their hurt on people.
