God is holy. All people are unholy. Critical to understanding judgment is that it may be delayed but it can never be cancelled out. God must be perfect and consistent in His justice.
At times in judgment God will give people what they want by turning them over to their sin. As a result they are being ripened for, not escaping, judgment.
As with the plagues in Egypt, the judgments of God serve two purposes. They display His greatness in dealing with rebellious people in judgment. They further serve to deliver His people according to His promises. By the time the seven year tribulation ends, God will have accomplished both of those purposes.
These series of judgments impact the bodies of both fresh and salt water, followed by a partial darkening of the sun, moon and stars.
As devastating and dramatic as the consequences are, the worst is yet to come. The three trumpet judgments to follow will warrant a special announcement and will be particularly directed to those who "dwell on the earth." These earth dwellers are unbelievers whose rightful home is earth as they willfully live under Satan's dominion. Even so, God's mercy will still be extended until their final sentencing to hell as will be revealed.
