Marriage is a burden. It causes you to be divided. The apostle Paul writes making these points to those who are not yet married and those who are considering getting married. Being single allows the believer to devote all energies, attention and resources to the Lord. Those who are married will have more worldly concerns and responsibilities in the marriage relationship. They are not negative but in reality there are obligations that must be fulfilled to live a life of godliness. As a result - interests will be divided for those who are married between pleasing the Lord and pleasing your spouse. Those who are not yet married should take this into consideration if they are considering marriage. Those who are unmarried must understand that their status is not to free them from obligations to pursue a life of fun and personal pleasures - it is to live a holy life of undistracted devotion to the Lord.
